Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are forms of indirect fillings. An Inlay or onlay is used when a tooth is very badly damaged or decayed, but not so much that a crown is required. Inlays and onlays, like crowns, can be made of porcelain to match the natural coloring of real teeth. They are sometimes even preferred over traditional fillings because they can provide additional strength to the damaged tooth.

An inlay fits inside the tooth and covers the space between the cusps; onlays cover a larger amount of outer surface area, and usually cover one or more cusps.
