When patients have extensive tooth loss, one excellent option for replacing missing teeth is a set of dentures. These are removable sets of teeth which are made of a special resin and customized to fit the natural contours of the mouth.
Full dentures, also known as “complete dentures”, are used to replace all the teeth in the mouth. They can be either “conventional” or “immediate”. Conventional full dentures are not put into the mouth until a month after all remaining teeth have been removed; this allows the gums to heal, and generally leads to fewer adjustments of the dentures themselves. Immediate full dentures are placed as soon as the teeth are removed.
Partial dentures are used to replace only a few select teeth and prevent healthy teeth from shifting position in the mouth. Removable partial dentures can be attached to the teeth with specialized metal clasps or with precision attachments, a type of device that is less visible than conventional clasps.
