Wisdom Teeth Extraction
A wisdom tooth is extracted to correct oral problems or to prevent any problems that may arise in the future. These teeth are the third and final set of molars that people get, typically in their teens or early twenties. When wisdom teeth come in, a number of problems can occur:
- Your jaw might be too small for them, and the teeth may become impacted and unable to break through your gums.
- Your wisdom teeth may break only partway through your gums, causing a flap of gum tissue to grow over them. Food and germs can get trapped under the flap and cause your gums to become red, swollen, and painful. These are signs of infection.
- More serious problems can develop from impacted teeth, such as infection, damage to other teeth and bone, or a cyst.
- One or more of your wisdom teeth may come in at an awkward angle, with the top of the tooth facing forward, backward, or to either side.
At Plateau Village Dental Centre, we offer wisdom teeth extraction for any of the problems that may occur above. Removing the wisdom teeth can have a very positive effect on your oral health and the procedure can be done relatively quickly, in one visit, in our dental office. You will be given a local anesthetic (freezing) to numb the area before the extraction begins, or you may be given a general anesthetic that can make you fall asleep. When the tooth is extracted you may need stitches to cover the wound and we will schedule follow-up appointments to make sure your healing is normal.
